About This Item

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1961. 1st American Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 12mo. First printing. Originally published in France. Black cloth boards, red lettering to spine and front board. Top edge black. Bruising to spine foot. DJ worn at extremities. A truthful novel of the nightmare called brainwashing. It is the story of Marty Landi, who is captured with his company and put in a POW camp on the Yalu. Marty is no hero, but somehow when the indoctrination classes begin and he watches his fellows, decent men, being cracked and broken by cruel techniques, he just can't give in.

Synopsis

I read this book in the 70's while I was taking my CSE Exams. I wanted to use this book for my exams because it had such an impact on me. I am now 51 years old and I still remember it vividly. The front cover depicted it well and was in its self a strong and moving image. I was mortified that I was not allowed to use this book as part of my course work.I still have this book today and I am hoping that my daughter who is a historian and teacher can used this book to illustrate the strength that overcame adversity. An excellent author who has had a strong impact on my literary life.
