About This Item

New York, NY Random House: Vintage Crime / Black Lizard, 1991. Paperback First Edition Thus; First Printing indicated. Very Good in Wraps: shows indications of very careful use: light wear to extremities, with a tiny crease right at the lower front corner tip; mild rubbing to wrapper covers and a bit of faint soiling; the binding leans a little, but remains perfectly secure; text clean. Remains structurally sound and tightly bound, and despite light wear, is clean, sturdy, presentable. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 139pp. First Edition Thus; First Printing indicated [1991]. Copyright 1947. Trade Paperback. 'Nightfall' is a short novel by David Goodis, written at the height of his career. True to form, Goodis focuses on a single character and his angst. This time we have a man who has difficulty remembering the details of his involvement with $300,000 taken in a bank heist. On his tail are the bank robbers and the police. a man on the run from the law, and the sympathetic policeman who takes an interest in his case. A beautiful book, spare and haunting. Not a wasted word. Goodis sometimes reaches for poetry in his tales, but here he achieves it with a delicate poise. This is one of the great post-war thrillers, and as close as anyone's ever come to evoking film noir on the page. Dark, brooding and claustrophobic. Just the way we like it. A must-read for those into 'noir' fiction.
