Brown Buckram, gilt spine and topboard print. 8vo. pp. 185. Near Fine. Traces of cover rub, internally read but fine (no marking or ownership). Nathaniel Willis and Asa Rand founded The Youth's Companion in 1827. The publication ran until 1927 when it merged with American Boy in 1929. Cambridge, Ma born Ford took over the Companion in 1857 and supplemented financial shortcomings by selling flags to public schools. The original Pledge of Allegiance appeared in the 9/8/1892 issue. Maine born writer and physician Stephens was a primary contributor (of about 1500 stories) which helped fund his Boston University medical school education. ..
