Hicks was a member of the history department at Berkeley for thirty years. He was the Morrison Professor of American history from 1942 until 1957, when he became Morrison Professor Emeritus. After retirement he actively continued his contact with students and his scholarly work. John Hicks was above all a teacher. By 1968, forty-five students had received their doctor's degrees under his direction. He reached a larger audience through the "Hicks histories"--The Federal Union (1937), The American Nation (1941), and A Short History of American Democracy (1943).
