About This Item
Glasgow: Printed by D. M'Kenzie for the Booksellers, 1806. xii, [1], 14-300pp. Uncut in original publisher's plain paper boards, title in manuscript to spine. Rubbing, with loss to spine. Internally clean and crisp. The second collection of travel writing from Sir John Carr (1772-1832), abridged here from the first edition of 1805 (apparently for the Scottish market) in the wake of the commercial success of his first work The Stranger in Paris (1803). The Stranger in Ireland appeared the year after, followed swiftly by A Tour through Holland followed (1807). Despite their popularity and profitability, the speed with which Carr produced his works for print led to criticism, with may claiming then to be of superficial at best, thus earning the author the nickname 'the jaunting car'. Satires of his work began to appear, notably Edward Dubois' attempt for which Carr would attempt to sue. Byron too was not adverse to joining the melee, referring to Carr, who he had met in Cadiz, in an excised stanza of Childe Harold as 'Europe's wandering star'. . Second edition. 8vo.
