About This Item

London: Simpkin, Marshall, 1921. With a study of the narratives of all explorers by sea and land in the light of modern charting, many original or hitherto unpublished documents, thirty-nine illustrations, and sixteen specially prepared maps. In two volumes. Volume I: Pp. xvi+366+[2](blank), portrait of the author as frontispiece, tissue guard, 20 portraits of explorers, 9 folding maps in pocket at end (including index map); Volume II: Pp. xiv+367-768, 18 portraits of explorers, 8 folding maps in pocket at end, 3 indices (Persons, Places & Subjects); roy. 8vo; gilt lettered dark green cloth, very slightly marked; dust wrappers, lightly browned, edges lightly split and chipped, backstrips darkened and with some chips at head and tail and a tear affecting the title on dust wrapper for Volume II; small bookplate (D. K. S. Kidd) on upper pastedowns, endpapers lightly offset, some foxing, mainly to edges of leaves; Simpkin Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co., London, 1921. First Edition, first (U.K.) issue. *An important work which contains, among numerous other narratives, accounts of explorations which are virtually unprocurable in original form, (e.g., those by William Carron, William Hann, James Mulligan, George Dalrymple, Donald Laing, J. T. Embley and others), including the not unimportant explorations of the author. The early voyagers, Quiros, Cook, Bligh, the 'Pandora', Flinders, etc. are also included. Scarce, particularly in the dust wrappers.
