Very good in very dark blue cloth with gilt lettering (previous owner's name, embossed seal on title page, some damage to the cloth on the spine, but overall clean and very tight and sturdy.). Second edition. This second edition, issued less than a year late and much larger, includes over 200 pages of new material, as well as updating a large portion of the material in the original edition. Illustrated with reproductions of advertisements. The first section - "quackery" - starts out with advertising specialists and goes on to cancer, consumption, drunkenness and obesity cures. The section on nostrums focuses on specific products, with their claims, a list of what they actually contain, and in some cases reports of negative - even fatal - side effects. Index. 708 pp.
