About This Item

London: Chatto & Windus, 1930. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A first edition copy of the semi-autobiographical novel by Rosamond Lehmann, based upon the author's marriage with painter Wogan Phillips, presented in the uncommon unclipped dust wrapper. First Edition. In the original unclipped dust wrapper. This is the second novel by Rosamond Lehmann, which is based upon the author's own marriage to the painter Wogan Phillips. The work follows a married couple named Hugh and Clare who visit an industrial town in North England and 'all but destroy the wedded happiness of these poor provincials'. Rosamond Lehmann (1901-1990) was an English novelist and translator, particularly known for 'Dusty Answer', which was referred to as a 'succes de scandale'. The work boosted her career into the intimate lives of the Bloomsbury Group. With four pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of text. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, very smart, with light bumping to the extremities and spine and a few marks to boards. A few spots to the end papers. Dust wrapper is smart with edge wear to the wraps and a bit of chipping particularly to the spine region of wraps, which has resulted in a few very small closed tears. Small closed tear to the top edge of the front wraps as well. Age-toning to wraps, particularly to the spine region, including the reverse, as well as the top edge of the fly leaves and reverse. A few spots to the reverse of wraps as well. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and very clean throughout, with light age-toning to the margins of text. Very Good Indeed
