Trade Paperback 213 pages. Condition Good Issued with NO Dust Jacket. Presumed First paperback edition. Elegant illustrated wraps on this tight and sound copy with no marks, highlights or bookplates. Notable shelf wear - cover creased, some dog-eared pages. Not an ex-library, book club or remainder copy.
A witty, tongue-in-cheek account of an Englishman trying to adapt to life in France with his French wife. A slight but amusing description of the foibles of the English and the French, as set forth by Daninos in the guise of the good-natured Major Thompson. A pleasant trifle, particularly with the mid-century illustrations by Walter Goetz.
Pierre Daninos (26 May 1913, Paris – 7 January 2005, Paris) was a French writer and humorist.
Daninos wrote Les carnets du Major Thompson, which was published in 1954, and was followed by many sequels. The books in the series pretended to be the observations of a retired British officer living in France, and were witty collections of comparisons between French and British society. Daninos is also the author of Un Certain Monsieur Blot, a critique of French middle class taste and habits.
