Book design by Dwiggins, set in his Linotype Electra. Edges rubbed, light specks to front cover. Edges and endpapers lightly age toned. Jacket edges a tad rubbed, top edge with short closed tears. The renowned type- and book-designer's stage melodrama on the rebellion of humans against tyrannous thinking machines. Published in reduced format under wartime paper restrictions, as explained on the jacket by Knopf. Dust jacket preserved in a removable clear archival sleeve.

LXXXII, [2] pp. Author signature at colophon. Bookplate at front pastedown. CONDITION: Near-fine, slightly bumped spine, minimal wear to extremities, label faded. Number 56 of an edition of "540 copies of this first formal publication of the Society" of Calligraphers, a fictional society invented by Dwiggins to promote his ideas on book-design and market himself to other more prominent presses (Shaw).
