About This Item
W. W. Norton & Company, 2002. First edition. Hardcover. As New/as new. As new in dust jacket. First edition/ printing. Hardcover. 455 pp. Brillian collection of 28 psychologically penetrating short stories, a great majority of which have never been seen before. The volume spans almot half a century of Highsmith's career, allowing the reader to see how the author evolved from a struggling freelance writer in New York City in the early 1940s to an American expatriate in Switzerland. Divided into two parts---Early Stories (1938-1949) and Later Stories (1952-1982), the collection begins with three stories first published when she was an undergraduate at Barnard College. It also includes pieces that proved too frank or radical for the American public of the 1940s and 50s that involved themes like alcoholism and child molestation, stories that she secretly hid away presuming they would be found after her death (as they were, in a linen closet).
