About This Item

A Paris,: Chez Laurent d'Houry,, 1698.. 4 parts in 2 volumes: (56), 333, (iii); (viii), 310, (xiv), 106, (iv) pp. Sm. 8vo. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands, in compartment gilt lettered and decorated (partly worn at joints and corners). A good copy of this rare first French edition of Bontekoe's ‘Werken’, originally published in 1689 by S. Blankaart, who also wrote the biography of Bontekoe in the first volume (‘Abregé de la Vie’). Bontekoe, who’s real name was Dekker, was a famous cartesian, recommended the use of opium, the incessant smoking of tobacco, and the continual drinking of tea, or sometimes coffee, for health and prolonging life. He supported Sylvius' theory of acid and alkali. Banga 627; Bayle/Thillaye II, 15; Thyssen-Schoute, 276. The N.U.C. gives two locations in U.S. libraries.-- Inscribed on the fly-leaves by Jacobi Collange, ‘Chirurgien’ (1751).
