A Paris,: Chez Laurent d'Houry,, 1698.. 4 parts in 2 volumes: (56), 333, (iii); (viii), 310, (xiv), 106, (iv) pp. Sm. 8vo. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands, in compartment gilt lettered and decorated (partly worn at joints and corners). A good copy of this rare first French edition of Bontekoe's Werken, originally published in 1689 by S. Blankaart, who also wrote the biography of Bontekoe in the first volume (Abregé de la Vie). Bontekoe, whos real name was Dekker, was a famous cartesian, recommended the use of opium, the incessant smoking of tobacco, and the continual drinking of tea, or sometimes coffee, for health and prolonging life. He supported Sylvius' theory of acid and alkali. The fourth part is: HUNAULT, Discours Physique sur les proprietez de la Sauge, & sur les reste des Plantes aromatiques, dans lequel par occasion l'on traite de la dissolution des corps, & de la digestion des alimens dans l'estomac (122 pp.).
