About This Item

Londres: Chez J. Read, 1724. 4to.  245 x 190 mm., [9 ½ x 7 ½ inches].  [viii], 175, [1] pp.  Illustrated with a stunning engraved title-page engraved by G. Davis, and woodcut head and tail pieces, initial letters, and printer's ornaments throughout.  Bound in contemporary calf, gilt diamond decoration in the center of both boards, single fillet gilt boarder, leather label; expertly rebacked, some scrapes and staining to the boards; with original marbled papers.  With faults a good sound copy.

As part of the preliminary leaves, Stanglini includes "A List of Subscribers" which lists over 100 names, including General Sabine, whose contemporary bookplate (John Sabine, Esqr.) appears on the front pastedown of this copy.  The list also includes the names of numerous members of the privilege classes, a good number of Italian expatriates, and a surprising number of women who subscribed to the Stanglini's Italian grammar.  One Monsieur Handel stands out as the most prominent member of the creative class.

In the introduction Stanglini writes in French, that "this edition will have this advantage over the previous ones, in that I have added several things which were missing, and which seemed to me absolutely necessary."  His additions include an expanded vocabulary of nouns and verbs, and a revision of some of the rules of grammar that clarify usage and an examination of idiomatic expressions.

OCLC cites only copies at UCLA, Yale, and Louisiana State in American libraries.  It is not listed in NUC under either Veneroni or Stanglini.  The ESTC lists it under Veneroni and cites copies in America at UCLA and Louisiana State.
