About This Item

First edition copy of Obermann by Senancour, translated by Arthur Edward Waite (A E Waite). Published by Brentano's in 1903.

Book is in very good condition. Prelims display some foxing but internal pages are clean and bright, and there are many that remain uncut. Spine displays some sunning but the cover is remarkably bright.

This is a novel written in the form of a series of letters by the French mystic Etienne Pivert de Senancour (1770 - 1846). Waite was led to the novel through his reading of Matthew Arnold's poems on Senancour and decided that the "primitive untutored mysticism" of the author deserved broader recognition.
