Printed for R Dodsley in Pall Mall and sold by M Cooper in Pater Noster Row , 1747. 1st edition.. Hardback. Modern cloth, VG. 80pp, small 4yo, a near fine copy, rebound at the John Rylands Library. 'Lyttelton' has been added in ink to the spine. The imprint is spurious - this edition is in fact a pirate copy, the true R Dodsely printing having 110pp. An extremely popular religious work, to which Dr Johnson conceded, 'infidelity has never been able to fabricate a specious answer' to it. George Lyttelton, First Baron Lyttelton [ 1709 - 1773 ] Whig politician, poet & patron of the arts, Lyttleton being on good terms with Pope, Thompson & Fielding. His two great passions Patriotism to England & Epic Verse. Up until the publication of this work in 1747 he had kept his religious beliefs to himself but upheavals in his personal life may have inspired him to seek solace in religion. ESTCN 10129.
