About This Item
Boston: Marsh Capen & Lyon Book. Fair. Soft cover. 1st Edition. 1833. First American Edition, viii, 260pp, four plates, bibliography, errata slip. With an appendix by Amariah Brigham, who founded the American Journal of Insanity. Outer hinges splitting, extremities badly worn, most of label missing, covers discolored, light dampstaining at the bottom corner of several pages, occasional foxing throughout, very bad foxing of pages 113-120, though perfectly legible, else a good working copy of a rare book. The author, (1776-1832), wrote a book with Franz Joseph Gall, in which they introduced the theory of localization of cerebral function, which gave rise to the pseudo-science of phrenology. In this book, he "elaborates on the application of phrenological principles to the understanding, classification, treatment and prevention of insanity.".
