Paris: De l'Imprimerie de Crapelet, Chez Raymond et Ménard, Libraries, Rue Hautefeuille, no. 16. 1811.. 4 vols. 8vo. (20 x 13 cm). Contemporary black morocco stamped in blind and gilt, signed P. Doll to foot of spine of volume one, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Portrait and 12 engraved illustrations "avant la lettre" by Moreau. Ex libris Marie Louise Maxwell-Scott with her bookplate on front pastedown of vol. 1. Lady Marie was the second wife of Major General Sir Walter Maxwell-Scott, a descendant of the Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet Walter Scott. They lived at Abbotsford, the Scott family home. P. Doll, Parisian bookbinder active c.1808 to1826, clients included Napoléon. Intermittent foxing throughout, some wear to spine and joints, notably to head of spine of first volume, generally very good. A finely printed book, with 12 engraved plates by Moreau le Jeune before letters and engraved under his directions (by Macret, Courbe, Hulk, Manage and Triere), and with an engraved frontispiece by Santerre, engraved by Dupréel. Racine (1639 – 1699) was a French dramatist and one of the foremost French writers of the 17thcentury; considered one of the "Big Three", along with Corneille and Moliére. His most famous works include Phédre, Andromaque, Les Plaideurs (a comedy) and Esther.
