An uncertain publishing history, but in all likelihood this is the true first edition. Covers are toned to a tan, more so on spine which is a brown tone (images available). Corners (mostly lower front) have some light wear. 6 preliminary pages, followed by 527 pages of text followed by 9 pages of ads. Rear cover lists 24 "Book by Upton Sinclair." UNCOMMON THUS. 527pp, ads.

Pages with some foxing and tanning, particularly to endpapers and textblock edges. Binding remains firm. Cracking to front hinge with netting exposed. Binding loose. A previous owner's name to front free endpaper. Boards have heavy shelf wear with bumping and fraying to corners and crushing, fraying and tearing to spine ends and edges. All surfaces heavily tanned, particularly spine. Gilt lettering to spine is slightly dulled. Book has strong forward lean.
