Chelsea House Pub, 1991-09-01. Library Binding. Very Good. Chelsea House Pub [Published Date: 1992]. Hardcover, 119 pp. Stated First Printing, (with full number line). In very good condition/ NO dust jacket. Glossy pictorial Paper over Boards have light bumping to edges and light overall scuffing. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-Library. NO remainder marks. [From back cover] The Ojibwa first settled around the eastern end of Lake Superior and the north shore of Lake Huron about 500 years ago. Because the Great Lakes were teeming with fish and the area's forests were rich in wildlife, the Ojibwa prospered by fishing, hunting, and foraging. When French fur traders arrived in the early 17th century, the Ojibwa added to this bounty by bartering pelts for European goods. They soon began to compete for hunting grounds with other nearby Indian tribes and expanded into new territory. By the mid-19th century, when American and Canadian officials initiated programs to concentrate Indians on reservations and reserves, the Ojibwa were already widely dispersed. Today they have reserved land in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, and Montana and in the Canadian provinces of Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. They have experienced a variety of changes in their ways of life as a result of contact with non-Indians, but the traditions of their ancestors have not disappeared. Through powwows, councils, and other cultural activities as well as fishing and gathering wild rice, the Ojibwa carry on their rich heritage. American Indians continue to play a very important role in American life, yet the history and culture of American Indian people has never been accurately portrayed for young adults. In this series, scholars—including three authorities who are themselves American Indians—present to young adults for the first time the significant place that American Indians have had in our society. These authors discuss the changing relationship between tribal groups and the federal government and describe each Indian culture in its own context and as it relates to the majority culture.

Description:
New York: Chelsea House, 1989. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good. 7 1/2 x 9 1/2, 111 pgs, b&w and a section of color photos. From the "Indians of North America" series. Like the Teton Sioux, the Cheyenne originally resided in Minnesota but settled in North and South Dakota in the 18th century. They eventually split into two divisions--Northern and Southern--that were separated by the Arkansas River. As with many Plains Indians, the Sun Dance, which called for a renewal of the natural world, played an integral role in Cheyenne society. Ex-library, rebound, with minimal markings.
