About This Item
S.R. Publishers. Very Good/Very Good. 1970. Hard Cover. 8vo 0854095454 Reprint of the 1926 edition. Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Red cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. 290 pp and 65 plates clean and tight. The author claims that he is attempting not a history, but some glimpses of Bedford's past. The book tells the story of Old Bedford up to the 17th November 1846, a date which, for the author, marks the end of an epoch. The earliest historical record of Bedford is an Anglo-Saxon chronical, and it is with Anglo-Saxons that the author starts this book. Famous people associated with Bedford and noteworthy events which have happened in the town are mentioned, and there are many illustrations. Old buildings, many of which have now disappeared are described. This is more of a personal account of Old Bedford than a formal history of the town, and the book is indeed, written in a personal style. .
