New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1879. First Edition. Hardcover. Light wear to spine ends; some bubbling to cloth at bottom front corner. Very Good to Near Fine. Decorated brown cloth. BAL 2330: First Printing. First state without the ads of Cable's first book. Estimates of the number of copies printed have ranged from 100 to about 3500 with 1000 copies being likely. This copy INSCRIBED and SIGNED to "Mrs. W. R. Harmount/with the compliments of the author/G. W. Cable/New Orleans, March 13, 1880." Mrs. Harmount was the wife of W. R. Harmount, a lieutenant in the Union Army who was captured by the Confederates at Chancellorsville and sent to Libby Prison. He also attended the State Convention of the Colored People of Louisiana in January of 1865.
