(11.8 x 8.3 inches). 8pp of text in German. 173 full page mono plates illustrating people playing musical instruments through the ages, most of them women. Neat presentaion inscription on the front free endpaper presenting the book to William Bentley, from the members of teaching staff of the Birmingham and Midland institute of Music, dated 16th July 1931. William Bentley (1862-1935) was honorary librarian and a Committee member at the School. In an attractive craft binding of full mid brown morocco. Spine with five raised bands. The compartments ruled and lettered in gilt. Triple blind ruled borders to boards with gilt corner dots. Circular blind tooled centre panels with a gilt harp and birds to the front board and the initials W B and floral devices to the rear. Board edges and turn-ins ruled in blind. Some rubbing to the extremities but overall a very good and attractive binding. The binding is unsigned.

1717 Life of Saint Bruno Eustache le SUEUR Painting Art HUGE FOLIO Engravings
Eustache le Sueur was a well-known 17th-century French artist known for his paintings of saints and church fathers. His most famous works was his series of paintings on the life of Saint Bruno aptly titled 'La Vie de St. Bruno'. After Sueur completed these paintings, they were sold to Louis XVI and were later placed in the Louvre where they still reside today.
These enormous, elephant-folio sized engravings of 'St. Bruno' were engraved by Francois Chauveau who is known to be one of the most desirable engravers for collectors.

1875. An album dated 1875 featuring the work of the "Beehive Club", with over 150 uniform postcard sized watercolour and pen works, gathered into themes. The output of a very talented, most likely youthful, or at the very least gleefully amateur, Victorian sketching club, possibly executed via correspondence, each member being given a brief to work with, and the results being carefully added to the album.The artworks are arranged around a regularly changing theme, often literary, such asworks centered on Longfellow's "Evangeline", or Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe", and sometimes the themed suites are broader and open to interpretation, as in the collection merely entitled "Winter", or the section titled "Ruins." Salvator Rosa was a 17th-century Baroque painter known for his paintings of landscapes and sketches of human poses. The latter were published in numerous art anthologies including this 1685 collection published in Nuremberg. These sketches depict soldiers in battle poses, thinkers and philosophers, and many other professions in curious poses and manners. These particular etchings were some of the most frequently copied and forged prints from this era and still provide a clinic in illustrating human form and emotion.
