New York: Life Magazine, 1952. One week before it was to be published as a hardcover book, Hemingway's classic novel The Old Man and the Sea was published in a single issue of Life Magazine. Although he was not uniformly positive in his review, Orville Prescott wrote in the New York Times on August 28, 1952 "The Old Man and the Sea is a short novel, only 27,000 words. It is much simpler and enormously better than Mr. Hemingway's last book, "Across the River and Into the Trees." No phony glamour girls and no bullying braggarts sentimentalized almost to parody distort its honest and elemental theme. No outbursts of spite or false theatricalism impede the smooth rush of its narrative. Within the sharp restrictions imposed by the very nature of his story Mr. Hemingway has written with sure skill. Here is the master technician once more at the top of his form, doing superbly what he can do better than anyone else." The magazine offered here is in about very good condition: clean and tight, with a mailing label at bottom of the front cover. There is minor edgewear and one 3/4 inch closed tear along the spine fold.. First Edition. Paperback. About Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Magazine.

Description:
London: Hutchinson, 1955. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. An attractive copy of this Roger Brook title in the original publisher's black cloth covers - minor push to the crown, corners lightly rubbed but a VG straight, tight and clean copy with bright gilt titles at the backstrip. The unclipped dustjacket is bright and clean with some minor loss at the corners and at the tail and a short tear to the top edge of the rear panel. Minor print soiling to the rear panel but much better than it sounds - Good++. At the title page the author has written, "With best Wishes from Dennis Wheatley". While signed/inscribed books by this author are by no means rare inscriptions are usually addressed to an individual by name - such generic inscriptions are uncommon.

"William Thomson, famous nineteenth century missionary, traveler, and author, described twenty-five years of surface study of Palestine as it relates to the Bible in his two-volume work, The Land and the Book. When he comes to describe Jerusalem he makes this remarkable statement; Do not set out...resolved to make discoveries. There is not a foot of ground that has not been already scrutinized by a thousand eyes as keen as yours, and the old adage, "If new not true," may be applied to Jerusalem and her monuments with more propriety than to any other place on earth...." - Introduction from Poet and Peasant: A…
