About This Item

This appears to be a custom-bound book containing four separate booklets associated with explorers/exploration. The title on the spine reads "OLD VOYAGES AND TRAVELS"; the following four booklets are contained within: * The Voyages and Travels of Sir John Maundeville, Knight. * Voyages and Travels of Marco Polo. * Voyagers' Tales from the Collections of Richard Hakluyt (which includes chapters on John Fox, Thomas Sanders, Philip Jones, John Hawkins, and Miles Phillips). * The Discovery of Guiana, and the Journal of the Second Voyage Thereto by Sir Walter Raleigh. Each booklet contains its own front cover and title page; there are no back covers. All booklets were published by Gressner & Schramm in Leipzig, Germany. Circa 1860's (there is no date of publication stated, but the years 1861, 1862, and 1863 are handwritten in pencil on three of the front covers). Bound in maroon cloth hardcovers with gilt on the spine and gilt top page edges. The front covers of the booklets within are softcover. The book is smaller in size - it measures 5 7/8" tall x 4 1/4" wide. Condition: There are some patches at the top and bottom edges of the front cover, and at the top edge of the back cover where the maroon cloth color has faded (these are not stains). Sharp cover corners. Tight binding with no loose pages. There is a crack at the front hinge between the cover and title page of the first booklet (despite the crack, the front cover is still firmly in place and is not shaky). Consistent light foxing throughout (though heavy foxing on the title pages and the pages facing the front covers. A thin strip has torn away at the top right corner of the title page of "Richard Hakluyt." The years 1861, 1862, and 1863 are handwritten in pencil on 3 of the front covers. Overall the book is in Good- condition.
