About This Item

London; Field & Tuer, Ye Leadenhalle Press, &. C., 1883., 1883. Hard Cover. FIRST EDITION. "As the many hundreds of illustrations are all hand-colored, the issue is necessarily limited." Quarto, nine parts in one volume. Illustrated hand-coloured woodcuts throughout; original printed wrappers to nine separately paginated individual ballads. Prospectus for "Chap-book Chaplets" bound in to front. Rebound in twentieth century taupe cloth with original hand-coloured illustrated spine and covers laid on. Housed in a gun-metal grey slip-case with maroon spine labels and gilt titles. Some mild scattered foxing, with an ink inscription in a neat 19th century hand "George Shaw with the compliments of the publishers" and an ink ownership stamp to ffep. A tight, square, clean copy without modern ownership inscriptions or annotations and bright and vivid illustrations. Fantastic work by eccentric wood-engraver, rope-maker, and antiquarian Joseph Crawhall II of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Crawhall's witty and vivid woodcuts are stylistically influenced from earlier everyday chapbooks and yet the designs are strikingly fresh and visually relevant. Felver, Charles S., "Joseph Crawhall, The Newcastle Wood Engraver" p. 140.
