Portland, OR.: Olds & King.. 1900.. Vintage Department Store catalog, 10 x 7 1/2 inches, 160 pp. The catalog was aimed at shoppers, chiefly women, who lived some distance from downtown Portland and who did their shopping by mail. An Olds & King treadle sewing machine advertises delivery "to your nearest railroad station, freight prepaid"; the cost was $25.00. Covers of the catalog are tattered; front cover detached; however, contents in good clean condition. An uncommon item. The store was a Portland institution for many years and in 1976 the building was converted to a multi-level shopping center called the "Galleria"; a present occupant is a scaled-down Target store Unsettling are the catalog illustrations of women’s hats and "ladies’ waists"; the hats are often fluffy piles with wings while the "waists" are offered as fulsome drawings to which out-of-scale photos of women’s heads are attached. Scary. .
