About This Item

Printed in Germany

"Oliver is an orphan living on the dangerous London streets with no one but himself to rely on. Fleeing from poverty and hardship, he falls in with a criminal street gang who will not let him go, however hard he tries to escape.

One of the most swiftly moving and unified of Charles Dickenss great novels, Oliver Twist is also famous for its re-creationthrough the splendidly realized figures of Fagin, Nancy, the Artful Dodger, and the evil Bill Sikesof the vast London underworld of pickpockets, thieves, prostitutes, and abandoned children. Victorian critics took Dickens to task for rendering this world in such a compelling, believable way, but readers over the last 150 years have delivered an alternative judgment by making this story of the orphaned Oliver Twist one of its authors most loved works." - bookfinder

This edition reprints the original Everymans introduction by G. K. Chesterton and includes twenty-four illustrations by George Cruikshank.

Synopsis

Oliver Twist , published in 1838, became one of English writer Charles  Dickens's better-known stories and was the first Victorian novel with a child protagonist.  Oliver Twist ( Parish Boy's Progress ) focuses on orphan Oliver Twist, born in a workhouse and sold into an apprenticeship with an undertaker. After escaping, Oliver travels to London, where he meets the "Artful Dodger", a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by an elderly criminal Fagin . The book shows an unromantic portrayal of criminals and the treatment of the many orphans in London in the mid-19th century.

NB&E, prides itself on rescuing unique and nostalgic books that sometimes include an element. I provide detailed descriptions, multiple photographs, and wrap most dust jacket in a protective sleeve.

Books are noted as either SIGNED or INSCRIBED accordingly. If the book is a remainder or ex-library it is noted. I seldom, if ever, sell these types of books. I CHERISH books and want to provide you with the books you will be proud to own.
