[WWII US OFFICE OF WAR INFORMATION RADIO PLAY WITH 'CHINESE SPOT' IN CHINESE PICTOGRAMS INSERTED]; SCRIPT IN FRENCH; RARE CAST SIGNATURES WWII ERA] ONCE UPON A TIME original radio script in French, World War II United States Office of War Information, Voice of America, French Project, Hollywood, French language half-hour radio script adaptation of the 1944 Columbia Pictures movie of the same title signed by Jon Loder and other cast members as required for payment…the radio play was intended to be broadcast to Occupied France but apparently never done so because of the Allied victory in May 1945 (as presumed since there is no broadcast date as with similar items purchased by seller as part of an archive), featuring the leading British-American actor John Loder among other actors of the period [with the signatures of the cast in pen beside their typewritten names], director Gerald Kean's annotated copy, original typescript manuscript in French with a few pages carbon copies, director annotations in colored and black pencil, 8-1/2" x 11", script is 32 pages, bound in legal-size manila folder by clasps through small holes at left edges of pages of the script, information on pages as front matter to the script or loose pages accompanying it includes Office of War Information - French Project, pages preceding start of the radio play contain director's notes and also most notably the signatures in pencil of the actors taking the different voice parts in the World War II radio program, in the list besides John Loder (1898-1988, British-American actor) are Mischa Auer (1905-67, Russian-born American actor, appeared as the bartender in the movie classic Casablanca), Denise Vernac (1916-84, French film actress), Guy de Vestel (d. 1973, Belgium/European actor), Gabby Harcourt (no information found online), and Jacque Catelain (1897-1965, French actor), there are also typed names for Bernard Deroux and Ted Kompanetz, but no signatures, all the actors' signatures were collected as required for work records and payments (as indicated by papers with similar items purchased by the seller), coming with the copy of the bound screenplay are a second working version of the it and additional mostly duplicate pages of notes on scenes and cast and work records for the actors…inserted between pages 19 and 20 of the script is a page headed ONCE UPON A TIME ) CHINESE SPOT" with the stamp "PASSED CONTROL", typescript text in full, "We in China, hear that in America the Rights of a dancing caterpillar is the subject of the hour. This is certainly interesting, but can hardly be termed significant," and underneath this Chinese pictographs, at lower left corner "Hollywood French Unit 11/8/45"; all signatures confirmed by seller with lifetime guarantee of authenticity, most of the signatures are rare; NOTES: ONCE UPON A TIME, 1944 Columbia Pictures American comedy/fantasy involving a dancing caterpillar who lives in a small box. Cary Grant plays a conniving showman who desperately needs money to save his theater. The film was based on a 1940 radio play.
