A smart three volume set of the first edition of James's historical work on Henry IV, in presentation from the author. Complete in three volumes. First edition. With an inscription from the author to the front endpaper reading "with the author's compliments" to each volume. A historical account of the life and deeds of Henry IV, Good King Henry or Henry the Great, the first monarch of France from the House of Bourbon who was involved in the Wars of Religion and barely escaped assassination in the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre. Written by George Payne Rainsford James, an English novelist and historical writer, who held the honorary office of British Historiographer Royal during the last years of William IV's reign. Previously held in the library of Francis Edward Witts, an English clergyman, diarist, and magistrate. In the original half green calf with marbled boards. Externally, sound with rubbing to the extremities. Joints cracked with a split to the spine of volume one. Leather coming away from the spine of volumes one and two. Rear board held by cords to volume one, front board detached but present to volume two, and front board held by cords to volume three. Fading to the spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with minor age toning to the extremities. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Good Only
