What's the gimmick? "Does it sell flour?"- Perhaps Harry Golden should write his own recipe for getting his book into the hands of the people who will like it. I humbly confess that I started out with the idea- ""This is just places from his monthly paper, The Carolina Israelite what has he to say to me; I can dash off a report on some samplings". The joke is on me. I read it through, with keen zeal and delight. The only thing I missed was the price of a subscription to the paper so I won't miss him any more. For here is that sort of writing that belongs in the stream of American tradition, from Bill Nye on to Finley Peter Dunn and Mark Twain and others of their ilk. There's that almost lost gift of preaching without mouthing platitudes, of presenting inflammatory issues with such a human touch, such lack of casuistry that the truth seems unanswerable. The folkways of his race comprise a large segment of his writings- and should lay the ghost of antisemitism forever. There's nostalgia here- without sentimentality. There's America at its grass roots. There are great people and small. There are long pieces and short. And throughout there's a man worth knowing -- here for you to meet. Foreword by Carl Sandburg.
