About This Item

Shitaya Shôboku, 1861. Woodblock print. Woodblock print, approximately 10x14.5 inches, depicting Dutchman in military costume on horseback, followed by a Javanese man holding an umbrella. Very good condition. The odd title in capital letters represents an attempt to Romanize the Japanese title, further adding to the exotic allure of this depiction of two of the foreigners whose presence drew such attention after the opening of the port at Yokohama.
