About This Item
Gul. & Joh. Innys. London. 1719. Editio Secunda, auctior. 4to. [19.8 cms.].. pp. (i) Title, (i) blank, xi, (i) Errata, 415, (i) Catalogus Librorum. 12 folding plates, occasional text figure. There is a stub following the title; this might indicate the removal of a leaf, possibly [A2] - some copies are described as having an Advertisement leaf before the title and this is LACKING here. The front joint is tight and there is no indication of this leaf having been cut out. It appears never to have been bound in. Contemporary panelled calf, a little wear to the spine ends and some scuffing, the second leaf [A4] is coming loose, the first few leaves with a small damp-mark in the lower margin, two leaves with a small tear in the centre now carefully repaired without loss of text, the end-papers with old, light pencil drawings, otherwise a clean tight copy. *SEE Babson Newton Collection #138 [8vo edition] - 'Neither this nor the later editions contain the two mathematical treatises included in the edition of 1706. The Queries are revised and extended from 23 to 31, including the famous Query No.28 on the nature of light.' This is found at pages 381-415. ALSO the Babson Supplement, page 25 listing the narrow 4to edition [as offered here] @ 19.7 cms. ALSO Gray, G.J. Newton #180 which gives a half-title before the title and collates with 4 leaves before signature 'a'. The copy offered here has 3 leaves plus the stub. ALSO ESTC T93215 which calls for an Advertisement leaf before the title and gives an initial collation of [A]4. The Bowyer ledgers record printing in both 8vo (750 copies) and 4to (250 copies), with identical collation. The copy offered is the quarto impression. Colophon on Ggg4r reads: Londini: ex officina Gulielmi Bowyer typographi, kalend. Septemb. MDCCXVIII. Signatures: [A] a B-Z Aa-Zz Aaa-Ggg . The plates are numbered in sections: V [at page 106], IV [at page 182], II [at page 314, rather than 316 as in Babson Supp.], I [at page 414]. (12 in total). The plates are reprinted from the English edition of 1704.
