About This Item

1857Oriental Annual TAJ MAHAL Aladdin Chinese Proverbs INDIA Hindu Turks

Hobart Caunter's "Oriental Annual" was a recurring 19th-century series containing stories from life and history in India. Caunter, an English writer, spent years of his life in India where he began writing and publishing numerous books on Indian culture, life, and history. Following the successes of the 1830s editions of Caunter's periodical, editor James Walker published an 1857 edition consisting of dozens of short stories and essays on Indian and Middle Eastern customs and culture. Notable works include Chinese proverbs and odes, on Hindu and Turkish women, Cherkessian war songs, Aladdin's wife, Arab legends and much more!

Note the impressive illustrations in this book, most impressively engravings of the Taj Mahal and the Qutb Minar!
