London: John Murray, 1872. An attractive copy in the original cloth Sixth edition, first issue, marked as the "eleventh thousand" on the title page; a particularly fresh copy of "the most important biological book ever written" (Freeman). The sixth edition is the last lifetime edition. It is also the first edition of the Origin of Species to feature the word "evolution"; the term was first used by Darwin in The Descent of Man (1871).
Darwin continually made revisions to his text; the sixth edition, which was first published in February 1872, featured a new chapter, chapter VII, inserted to refute the views of the Roman Catholic biologist St George Mivart, as well as a glossary by W. S. Dallas (pp. 430-41). "The edition was aimed at a wider public and printed in smaller type... giving the general impression of a cheap edition, which at 7s. 6d. it was" (Freeman). The first issue reads "eleventh thousand" on the title page, noting the total issue of copies from the first edition of 1859 onwards, the second issue reading "twelfth thousand"; both were issued the same year. Octavo. Original green ribbed-grain cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt and blind, frames and central vignette blind-stamped to covers, brown endpapers. Folding diagram facing p. 91. Cloth and gilt bright and unfaded, spine ends bumped, corners a trifle rubbed, contents crisp and clean, very occasional foxing. A near-fine copy. Freeman 391.
