John Murray,, 1900. 8vo., Sixth Edition, Popular Impression, Second Impression, with portrait frontispiece (original tissue guard present) and folding diagram, endpapers very lightly browned, neat contemporary signature (1901) on front free endpaper; original decorative arches-style green cloth, upper board blocked and lettered in blind, gilt back, upper hinge starting at advertisement (but binding entirely sound), joints mildly rubbed, a little chafing at headband else a very good, clean copy. With the advertisement leaf preceding half-title. Most issues after 1872 are based on the sixth edition, containing as it does Darwin's final major corrections and revisions. The sixth is the first edition with the title The Origin of Species, and includes among many other revisions a new chapter inserted to confute the views of the Catholic biologist St. George Mivart. There is a glossary, and the word 'evolution' is used in the text for the first time. The present copy is the Second Impression (November 1900) of the Popular Impression published two months earlier. VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Freeman (Darwin), 147.
