About This Item
Deposit, NY: The Deposit Journal, 1894. Second edition [1894], first published in 1851. Hard to find title. True story of a son avenging the death of his father during the French and Indian Wars. Settling in Milford, Pennsylvania, the family had previously enjoyed a peaceful relationship with the Indians. At the outbreak of the French and Indian Wars, the relationship with the small group of settlers became strained and there was a dispute about the land referred to as Minisink. Quick's father was killed and scalped during a sudden attack, which led Quick to a long and vengeful campaign to kill as many Indians as he could. In fact, he killed nearly a hundred of them over many years, and eventually died of old age. This account was originally published in 1851. This second edition itself is quite scarce. Dark green cloth free from any lettering or other identification, 123 pages. Covers have a lot of surface wear and rubbing, and some fraying to the spine ends, hinges cracked, front free endpaper and title page detached, contents page partially detached. The pages are age-toned and brittle, which may account for the scarcity of surviving copies. There are a few outer margin chips but no significant chips or tears, a name on the front pastedown and a small sticker on the front free endpaper, no other markings. . Second Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
