Admiral Alan Hyde Gardner

Given on board the Blake at Sea, 18 July 1809. 1 page 12½ x 8 inches, folds, in good condition. HMS Blake took part in the action of 15 August, which led to the French surrender. Alan Hyde Gardner, KCB, 2nd Baron Gardner (1770 – 1815) was the son of Admiral Alan Gardner, 1st Baron Gardner, and followed his father into the Royal Navy. In 1796 he was captain of the frigate HMS Heroine, and in 1805 of the 74 gun HMS Hero - in the latter he was present at the action off Ferrol in 1805 and led the vanguard at the Battle of Cape Finisterre later that year.
