About This Item

1884. Fine. Oil on canvas. Measures 9¾" x 11½" to the inside edges of a cloth matt frame, neatly mounted inside a gilt wood frame (14½" x 16¼"). Titled and inscribed by the artist: "Study of Frost - by Daggy, Jan. 20th, 1884". A remarkable early portrait of American artist A.B. Frost, best known for his illustrations of sporting scenes and of "Brer Rabbit" and other characters in the Uncle Remus books by Joel Chandler Harris. Painted by Augustus Daggy, one of Frost's closest friends, shortly after both were fellow students in a class taught by Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In fine condition, with rubbing and a few scattered nicks at the gilt edges of the wood frame. The painting was used as the frontispiece to *The A.B. Frost Book* by Henry Reed. Accompanied with a very good copy of Reed's book, together with a 1967 Typed Letter, Signed by Marguerite Daggy, daughter of Augustus, written to Henry Reed.
