Pencil on heavy weight tracing paper, image approximately 10 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches, 14 x 9 inches overall. 1 vols. Original Mad Magazine Drawing. Norman Mingo (1896-1980) was an American artist best known for his work for Mad magazine, for which he formalized the image of Mad's mascot, Alfred E. Neuman. Mingo's portrait was the first time Neuman was presented in color, and Mingo produced 97 mad covers in total.
This delightful drawing shows Alfred E. Neuman in later life, his aging image bearing a hilarious and doubtless intentional resemblance to the then-current NYC Mayor, Abe Beame. Done as a preliminary to a subsequent painting.
