Description:
This pioneering Canadian illustrator and author appeared in "St. Nicholas Magazine" often, where his "Brownies" often appeared; they debuted in book form in "The Brownies, Their Book" in 1887, appearing in a dozen volumes with titles such as "The Brownies Abroad" and "The Brownies Around the World." Delightful ink sketch of a typical brownie head-and-shoulders portrait within a 3/4" diameter circle in black ink at upper left of a heavy stock 3½" X 2" card, and Cox's large handsome signature in brown ink at center. Fine. Accompanied by a 7" X 9" glossy book portrait of Cox (with facsimile signature and "Yours in Brownieland" inscription below), a leaf from the June 1894 "Book News Portraits" (No. 97, Volume 12). Fine. An outstanding pair, ideal for display.

[Np: The Artist, ca. 1962].. Original watercolor on paper (13.5 x 8"; 345 x 200 mm). Signed by the artist in the left lower corner, and captioned in pencil on verso. About fine. A close-up full-body rendering of a pangolin next to a waterhole, with a suggestion of its focusing on its own reflection in the water. This watercolor was painted at the approximate time of Parker's work on the illustrations for the limited edition of Marianne Moore's EIGHT POEMS, published by the Museum of Modern Art. It is a much more detailed and finished piece than the drawings executed for that work.

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
