Edinburgh: Printed By James Ballantyne and Co., and sold by John Ballantyne, 1817. [8]. 91pp, [1]. With half-title. Uncut in original publisher's boards, printed label to upper wrapper. Some marking, slightest of wear to extremities, else a fine copy. With the bookplate of Ian Jack to FEP. Presentation copy, inscribed 'To Mrs Clevering, from the author. May 28. 1817' A presentation copy from Scottish poet and translator Robert Pierce Gillies (1788-1858) of a work that includes some stinging comments on the state of modern poetry in the postscript to - which deems dubbing vacuous tales of mystery in verse to 'just as useless as any other modern novel from the shelves of Lane, Newman, & Co', referencing a supportive quote borrowed from Wordsworth. Gillies was a friend of Walter Scott, and a copy of this present work was included in the library at Abbotsford. Rare, with COPAC locating only four copies in British libraries (BL, Glasgow, NLS and Oxford); OCLC adds only three further at Harvard, Texas and UNC. Jackson p.422.. First edition. Quarto.
