President Kennedy agreed to remove Jupiter missiles from Italy and Turkey, an arrangement concealed from both the American public and NATO allies. Despite misgivings, both Eisenhower and Kennedy proceeded to deploy the missiles, in response to the Soviet launch of Sputnik satellites. This deployment played a significant role in the response of Soviet leader Krushchev to deploy his missiles to Cuba.
