Signed [9.25x6.25in]; xiii, [10], illustrations, 422 pp., frontispiece color illustration of sea otter by John Webber, 11 illustrations of plates from exploration books by Cook, Vancouver, Dixon, and others, nine tables of trade ships by years, extensive notes and bibliography, index; Black cloth cover with gilt lettering and designs on spine, tan end papers with maps of the world routes and Northwest coast [of North America], all edges trimmed; Black dust jacket with white and tan lettering on front and spine inside white borders with designs, brown-toned illustration of sea otter by Webber on front, review of book on back; Negligible shelf wear to book or dust jacket, short inscription by author on title page. This is a readable scholarly on the fur trade system from the Pacific Northwest to China and then to Europe and America in the late 1700's and 1800's. Gibson is a professor that has focused on geography and the Pacific Northwest discovery and development. This book adds to the previous works on the global trade developed in the late 1700's from journals and other sources related to Russian, Spanish, British, as well as American trade. This book is one of the six in the McGill-Queen's Native and Northern Series editied by Bruce Trigger.
