Pro-slavery, anti-secessionist minister and newspaper editor William Gannaway Brownlow (who later served as a Senator and Governor of Tennessee) debates anti-slavery New York clergyman Abram Pryne, editor of an abolitionist newspaper. Decoratively blindstamped gray cloth boards with gilt lettered spine. About very good with small hole in cloth on rear cover, light damp staining to inside bottom corners throughout, and portraits of the debaters (frontis and facing p.52) lightly foxed.

Spine cockeyed and holes wearing through the cloth along the edges. Corners rubbed through. Early owners' inscriptions and doodling on endpapers; one is dated 1858. Pages heavily foxed and many segments of pages coming loose, but still weakly attached. A heavily worn but readable copy. A debate on the merits of slavery from the mid-19th century.
