About This Item

New York, New York, U.S.A.: The John Day Company, 1934. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. x, 394pp. Top edge dyed yellow. Yellow DJ flap tipped on to front pastedown. Adhesive ghost on ffep, perhaps from where rear DJ flap had been tipped on, now missing. Brick-red cloth with gold lettering on spine. Lettering dulled. Minor wear to head and tail and corners. Joints and hinges sound. "Mr. Rorty attacks advertising joyfully, wittily, yet in deadly earnest and with a wealth of knowledge out of his own experience in advertising agencies. Every advertising man will enjoy this book, though parts of it will anger him. The consumer, the victim of advertising, will read it with alternating chuckles and groans, and perhaps with a new resolve to Do Something About It [sic]. Radio, press agency, propaganda in the sacred name of education, and the crass devices by which mob opinion is made to serve the ends of an acquisitive, competitive commercialism, all fall under Mr. Rorty's lash.
