London, Brighton and New York: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge A very good copy in the original brown decorative buckram cloth binding with 72 colour printed plates. This is a later edition, published in the 1870's, with bookplate of Salisbury Diocesan Board of Education dated May 1879 to the front pastedown endpaper. The binding is very bright, clean and sound with blind ruled lines and gilt bird to the front board and a decorative leaf design and titles to spine. Board edges are bevelled. Internally contents are complete with 72 colour plates by Anne Pratt and a 4 pp publisher's catalogue at the rear. The contents are very clean with light foxing, particularly at the beginning and end of the work. There is some dark marking at the bottom page corners edge visible externally. Anne Pratt (1806-1893) authored and illustrated a number of natural history works, unusually for the time, under her own name. Her books were extremely popular.
