About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1953. Hardcover. Very Good/Near Fine. First edition. Corners a little bumped, age-toning at the edges of the boards, and the page edges a bit soiled, a very good copy in a near fine dust jacket with some slight rubbing at the spinal extremities and with a short tear on the front panel. Very nicely Inscribed by Wright to author Gail Lumet Buckley, a journalist and the daughter of the actress and singer Lena Horne: "To Gail 'Freedom belongs to the strong...' With my best wishes As ever. Dick Jan. 11, 1955 Paris." In addition to writing several other books, Buckley wrote *The Hornes: An American Family* and her time in Paris with her famous mother are detailed in Horne's own autobiography *Lena*. Buckley was also married to acclaimed filmmaker Sidney Lumet from 1963 to 1978. This was Wright's first novel since *Native Son*, and is seldom found in nice condition due to the susceptibility of the uncoated black jacket to rub and tear, this is a very nice copy, with a significant association.
