About This Item

London: Hamish Hamilton, 1946. First edition. Cloth. Good/Good. 7.5" by 5". None . A first UK impression of this collection of ten short stories by Roald Dahl, in the unclipped dust wrapper. A collection of short stories by the famed author Roald Dahl. The first UK edition and impression, the true first edition was published in the same year in the US by Reynal & Hitchcock.Dahl's short stories are usually known for their unexpected endings, however this early collection departs from his better known stories, as for most part they don't use suspense and leave out twist endings. Instead, they are more slow-paced and highly reflective. Containing ten short stories of flyers and flying, drawn upon the author's experiences in the R.A.F. Some of the titles comprised are: 'An African Story,' 'Beware of the Dog,' 'Someone Like You,' and 'Yesterday was Beautiful.' With the unclipped dust wrapper. Unfortunately the boards have suffered some damp damage, but this copy is lovely internally. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with minor shelf wear and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and some damp damage to the boards and spine, particularly to the front board. The dust wrapper is also sound with some shelf wear and spotting to the wraps, some chipping, and a minor loss to the rear wrap and the tail of the spine, with some minor soiling throughout; unclipped. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Good

Synopsis

During the Second World War Roald Dahl served in the RAF and even suffered horrific injuries in an air crash in the Libyan Desert. Drawing on his own experience as a fighter pilot, Dahl crafted these ten spine-tingling stories: of air battles in the sky; of the nightmare of being shot down; the infectious madness of conflict; and the nervy jollity of the Mess and Ops room. Dahl brilliantly conveys the bizarre reality of a wartime pilot's daily existence, where death is a constant companion and life is lived from one heartbeat to the next.
