George Douglas Brewerton, recounting his experiences riding east with Christopher "Kit" Carson in 1848 from Los Angeles. At the conclusion of the Mexican War, which added California to the Union, Carson carried official dispatches to Washington with the news of the victory. With two, two-page Stallo Vinton maps showing routes taken across the country, as well as several drawings by the author.
