New York: George H. Doran Company, 1925. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, first printing, with publisher's device on copyright page; page 16, line 15 reads "Hong Kong." Very Good in a Very Good dust jacket. Thin strip of fading to cloth at bottom edge, gilt title stamping on spine is sharp and bright. Insect wear to top edge of page block, pages toned, and with a crease to the bottom corner of the title and half-title page. The dust jacket is chipped along the edges, lightly rubbed, and soiled with several stains to the spine panel; price of $2.00 present at base of spine.


W. Somerset Maugham was one of the twentieth century’s most popular novelists as well as a celebrated playwright, critic, and short story writer. He was born in Paris but grew up in England and served as a secret agent for the British during World War I. He wrote many novels, including the classics Of Human Bondage , The Razor’s Edge , Cakes and Ale , Christmas Holiday , The Moon and Sixpence , Theatre , and Up at the Villa .
